First,
take a look at this scan from the Helm service manual. We
will be changing the Right Front Mount, Left Front Mount,
and Rear Mount.
Here
you see the parts that come with the kit. Start by Putting
the car up on Jack stands. Remember to put the emergency
brake on first. Remove the black plastic guard from the
front bottom part of the bumper it will have (depending
of the type of car) about 5 plastic screws and three 10mm
bolts.
First,
we will work on the front driver side mount. Start by removing
the 19mm bolt, access it from the wheel well.
Next,
from under the car remove the two 14mm bolts that hold the
mount onto the frame.
Now
in order to take out the mount, you will need to use the
17mm deep well socket to loosen the two bolts in the side
engine mount DO NOT remove the bolts, just loosen them enough
so that the engine is low enough to take the driver side
front mount off.
This
is the mount shown with the corresponding inserts. (I didn't
show the two zip ties in this pic)
This
is what you should have after the mount is assembled with
the inserts. The inserts may be difficult to get into the
mounts, If you have problems fitting them, you may need
to shave off a little bit of the urethane insert. DO NOT
cut any part of the mount. this may lead to a weak mount
and cause a dangerous situation. Reinstall the mount in
the reverse order. Torque bolts to spec
Time
for the Passenger side. This is very similar to the driver
side. Start by removing the 19mm and two 14mm bolts on the
mount. If you have a Cold Air Intake, you are going to need
to remove the filter at this point. (as I did)
Next
you will need to remove the three bolts that hold the mount
bracket to the tranny. It will save a few minutes if you
remove two and just loosen the third. It will then swing
down like in the pic and you can remove the mount.
You
will now follow the same process as with the driver side
mount.
Reinstall
the mount in the reverse order to removal. Torque to spec.
On
to the last and most difficult mount. the rear mount is
quite tricky so be prepared to say a few curse words and
take a break somewhere in here (at you leisure of course)
I am sure that with the b16 or b18c5 it would be easier
than it was with my b18c because the b18c has a much larger
intake manifold which covers most of the workspace for the
rear mount. You also may need to remove whatever air intake
you have. Now start by removing the three 14mm bolts that
are holding the mount to the frame. This is where the wobble
extension comes in handy.
Next
remove the 17mm bolt that holds the mount bracket to the
mount. Using a wobble extension here will also be helpful.
after the bolts are removed, put a jack under the oil pan
and put the wooden piece of wood on the jack head so that
you do not damage the oil pan. Jack up the jack until it
starts to raise the engine. You should only need to jack
up the engine about 1/2 to 1 inch (more if needed). Now
remove the mount by turning it clockwise while wiggling
it. Its pretty tricky, but it will come out.
You
now need to take a few minutes and rest heheh.
Now
assemble the mount and inserts just like the previous two.
Reinstall the mount in the reverse order of removal. It
will be a bit harder to get the mount into the bracket with
the inserts installed but it will go in. Torque to spec.
Reinstall the plastic splash guard and lower the car and
take it for a test drive.
